Libya announces end of voting process for sixteen municipal councils

(MENAFN) The Libyan High National Elections Commission (HNEC) announced on Saturday that voting has concluded and ballot counting has begun for 16 municipal councils as part of the third phase of local elections.

“Polling centers closed at exactly 6:00 pm local time (1600GMT),” the HNEC stated. The commission added that “the preliminary number of voters recorded after the closure of polling centers reached 63,169, representing an initial turnout of 68%.”

The HNEC noted that “the electoral process proceeded in an orderly and secure manner across the targeted municipalities, with polling centers adhering to approved procedures and productive cooperation among supporting institutions.” Officials confirmed that they are closely overseeing the reconciliation, sorting, and counting of ballots within the polling centers.

Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah welcomed the continuation of municipal elections, saying they demonstrate that Libyans “can practice democracy efficiently.” He emphasized that the conditions enabling local polls also “allow for national elections without a new transitional phase.”

Earlier, the HNEC reported that voting began in the morning at 142 polling centers across the 16 municipalities, comprising 341 voting stations. About 96,000 registered voters were eligible to elect 743 candidates through a mixed system combining party lists and individual candidacies. By 2 pm local time, 26,311 voters had cast their ballots, representing an initial turnout of approximately 30%, according to the commission.
