Moscow Denounces Death of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi in Libya’s Zintan

(MENAFN) Russia has strongly criticized the killing of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the second son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, following his death in the western Libyan city of Zintan, according to official statements released Wednesday.

In remarks issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry, spokeswoman Maria Zakharova urged that those responsible be brought to justice and stressed the need for clarity surrounding the incident. Calling for accountability, she demanded “a thorough and transparent investigation” into the killing.

“We condemn this crime in the strongest terms. It is imperative that a thorough and transparent investigation is conducted without delay, and that those responsible are held accountable,” she said.

Zakharova also conveyed condolences to Saif al-Islam Gaddafi’s relatives and close associates, according to the statement.

Libyan authorities said Saif al-Islam, aged 53, was killed Tuesday in Zintan. According to reports, he was shot by four masked attackers after surveillance cameras at his residence were disabled ahead of the assault.

Moussa Ibrahim, who previously served as a spokesman for the Gaddafi government, described the killing as a betrayal, saying Saif al-Islam was “killed treacherously,” and noted that he had been committed to the vision of “a united, sovereign and safe Libya for all its people.”

Ibrahim added that he had spoken with Saif al-Islam just two days before the attack, saying his primary concerns at the time were Libya’s stability and the protection of its population, according to reports.
