UN Warns Libya Facing Growing Instability Amid Political Deadlock
Briefing the UN Security Council, Hanna Tetteh said progress on the political roadmap has fallen short of expectations, noting, “We are not where we would like to be in terms of progress on the roadmap,” and warning that some Libyan actors are bypassing public expectations and democratic accountability.
She expressed concern that parallel structures formed outside agreed political frameworks are undermining international efforts to unify Libya’s institutions. Tetteh cautioned that continuing with the current situation without meaningful pressure for reform risks entrenching the status quo rather than encouraging negotiations and compromise.
“Conducting business as usual under the current circumstances inadvertently legitimizes the status quo rather than incentivizing serious negotiations and encouraging the necessary compromises to reunify the country,” she said.
She also warned that delays in the political process carry broader consequences beyond Libya, pointing to regional implications if the impasse continues.
“There are both national and regional risks to any continued inaction and foot-dragging on the implementation of the roadmap,” she added, according to reports.
On the economic situation, Tetteh highlighted worsening conditions since her previous briefing, including inflationary pressures, fuel shortages, and rising poverty levels, describing them as indicators that deeper structural changes are urgently needed.
