Eleven Migrants Lose Their Lives During Rescue Attempt Near Malta
Authorities said they were alerted on Sunday evening by a fishing vessel that had spotted a migrant boat in distress roughly 50 nautical miles east of Malta, beyond the country's territorial waters.
Following the alert, the rescue coordination center instructed the fishing vessel and other nearby ships to assist those on board the troubled vessel.
During the rescue effort, several migrants entered the water as they attempted to reach the fishing boat. The incident resulted in multiple fatalities.
According to reports, an Italian rescue vessel later recovered the bodies of the 11 victims. Authorities also indicated that the migrant boat had set sail from Libya.
Commenting on the tragedy, Malta's interior minister said, "Every life lost is one too many. We need stronger European action against human smugglers and a coordinated Mediterranean approach to migration to prevent further tragedies."
